If you grew up in the '90s watching Star Trek like I did, perhaps hearing the words "data science" causes you to think of the fictional android character, Data, whose positronic brain allowed for many impressive talents including calculating and analyzing data with extemporaneous precision. These calculations often gave the crew the advantage they needed to solve complex problems. While data scientists are not fictional characters from Star Trek, they do collect, mine, analyze, structure and present data to help organizations identify trends and root causes and ultimately drive strategies that will impact the bottom line.
